Each year the school does their annual “Egg Drop Challenge” and this was Cole’s first try. Beau has participated 3 times and his egg has survived every time. The goal is to create a contraption that will keep a raw egg in tact while it is “chucked” off of the school roof and crashes to the ground.

The Easter Bunny left treats at home while we were gone. It was so exciting to get home to hidden eggs and Easter baskets.

We traveled to Elk Grove, CA to watch Beau play in the Easter Slugfest this weekend. We headed out Friday, which was David’s birthday and stopped for dinner and hit Baskin Robbins for a birthday treat!

This weekend was also Easter weekend and the first time we would be away from home on a holiday. It turned out to be a great weekend full of fun, a little bit of sun and baseball.
We gave the boys a little pre-Easter gift before we left.

We helped Rylee celebrate her 10th birthday this weekend at Moon Rocks. Everyone had a great time playing on their 4 wheelers. Having boys is shaving years off of my life but I wouldn’t want it any other way.

With the rising cost of child care and decreasing wages, Sparks resident Kristy Schaffer gave up her job as a loan officer at a financial institution so that she could focus on being a full-time mother and volunteer at her children’s school.
“It was no longer benefiting my family for me to be at work,” said Schaffer.
Schaffer is grateful that her husband, Dave, is hard working and has a good job so that she is able to stop working and be a mother. A few times a month she sells products from Thirty One Gifts as an Independent Consultant but most of her time is spent at home with her kids.
Schaffer, originally from Orange County, Calif., moved to Reno with her brothers after her dad was relocated there for work. She then moved to Sparks in 2000 after she met Dave, who was born and raised here. They have been happily married for 11 and a half years and have two kids, 9-year-old Beau and 6-year-old Cole.
Schaffer started volunteering at her boys’ school, Alyce Taylor Elementary, last year and she loves every minute of it. She works in Cole’s Kindergarten class on Mondays, helping the kids in their journaling, writing, math and science. She also volunteers in Beau’s third-grade class on Friday’s helping file their schoolwork, make copies of papers and help the kids with class activities.
Schaffer said the experience of being in her kids’ classrooms and helping students has helped her realize how lucky she is to have her children go to such a great school with amazing teachers.
“I have always admired and appreciated teachers for all that they do but I appreciate the school and the teachers on such a higher level now that I am able to physically see the day-to-day process. They are so passionate about what they do and they genuinely love our kids,” said Schaffer.
She loves being able to watch her kids grow at school and finds the experience rewarding each time she’s there. Schaffer is glad her job as a full-time mother gives her more time to spend with her kids. On days off, the family enjoys camping, riding its ATVs and her boys play travel baseball for a local program in Sparks called The Muckdogs Baseball Club.
“Our boys are baseball nuts! I’m your typical baseball mom, running my boys to practices or games on most nights and weekends. We absolutely love to watch our boys play and grow,” said Schaffer.
Schaffer said she loves the small-town feel of living in Sparks and likes how her kids have a great community of friends that are growing up together at school and in extracurricular activities. She loves living in Sparks because the people are caring and have a great sense of pride in helping the community more than anywhere else.
“It is truly an amazing community where many people share the same interests and passions. They are like an extended family,” said Schaffer.
In five years, Schaffer sees herself still living in Sparks and still being the best wife, mother and friend that she can be. She said she will still be volunteering in youth sports and at the schools, maybe even more often.
“I live for my family. We have such an amazing life together. Every day is a blessing and a new adventure,” said Schaffer.
